Tagging for the rest of us

Published by Niall Cook April 5th, 2007 in Enterprise bookmarking

There’s been quite a bit of interest in Honeywell’s roll out of social tagging, as first reported by Rich Hoeg. It’s being hailed as “Enterprise 2.0 goes mainstream!”, a milestone that signals that Enterprise 2.0 has arrived.

It’s great to see, but let’s not get carried away. The “mainstream” is not actually one or two big companies installing these kinds of systems for tens of thousands of employees (although of course that is both interesting and bound to get a lot of attention). No, the vast majority of companies who would see the most benefit from social bookmarking behind the firewall are those mid-level organisations with disparate offices and teams who they need to connect together and aggregate the “wisdom of the crowds”.

With this in mind, we don’t even mind that Honeywell has chosen a solution like Connectbeam - no doubt it fits their needs (and budgets!). Anything that helps educate companies about the benefits of enterprise bookmarking is fine in our book.
